Gas Applications

APPLICATION: MERCURY REMOVAL FROM GASES

MERSORB® mercury adsorbent has been used successfully in many plants and widely different types of industries. This product is an activated carbon pellet (extrudate) with a high internal surface area (1,000 m2/g) that has been impregnated with elemental sulfur by a proprietary method. Our impregnation technique creates high dispersion of the sulfur inside the activated carbon, thus high availability of the sulfur to remove mercury.

Some carbon manufacturers indicate a high weight percent of sulfur impregnant on their carbon. But, if high sulfur content were the key to performance in removing mercury, then a vessel full of lumps of sulfur would be ideal. In actual fact, it is the available surface area of sulfur that is the key to a high-performance mercury adsorbent.

MERSORB® mercury adsorbent 3mm & 4mm diameter pellets and 3x6 and 4x8 mesh granular, coconut-shell-based particle sizes are used for gas phase (hydrocarbon gas, H2, air, & synthesis gas) applications, providing mercury removal efficiencies to 99.99+ % and a pressure drop within the limits specified by the client. MERSORB® mercury adsorbent applications include: Both Wet & Dry Natural Gas in Natural Gas Plants to prevent Hg corrosion in cryogenic equipment; Cracked Gas in Ethylene Plants to protect catalysts & aluminum equipment; Light Olefin Gas Recovered from FCC Units to protect the receiving ethylene plant; Chloralkali Plants for Hydrogen purification; Emission Control for Hot Off-Gas from Retorting of Hg-bearing sludge; Emission Control at Gold Refiners, & Emission Control at Fluorescent Lamp Manufacturers & Recyclers.

Some clients using competitors’ Hg adsorbents to treat warm gases experienced sulfur loss and decreased Hg removal efficiency. When they started using MERSORB® mercury adsorbent, our clients achieved high-efficiency mercury removal. Our product can withstand higher temperatures than competitive products without losing the sulfur impregnant. Our products do not require N2 blanketing during vessel loading. Applications are designed for each client’s specific operating conditions.

CAUTION: Wet activated carbon removes oxygen from air. Thus, an asphyxiation hazard exists inside enclosed spaces containing activated carbon. Use appropriate safety precautions when entering vessels or other enclosed spaces containing activated carbon. Exposure to strong acids and oxidizers can cause formation of toxic H2S gas.
